A Social Approach to Safety - How to Increase Workforce Engagement with SafetyFeed

What are the top challenges your company faces on its journey to improve safety culture? We’ve learned that in almost every organisation, increasing the engagement of the workforce and improving safety communication are in the top 5. They are real challenges that no EHS software has been able to solve before.

In our mission to engage people and make safety smarter, we are introducing the biggest change to our platform so far – SafetyFeed. This innovation is a result of learning how to motivate people to get involved in safety, an issue we’ve discussed with a variety of industry experts. And yes, we did also talk with the people working on the field and sites doing the actual reporting. We’ve noticed that one of the biggest barriers to  engagement is the lack of social and communal connection with peers and colleagues, rather than just the management. Workplace safety is a textbook example of how the traditional model has been a one-way street from top to bottom when it comes to the flow of information. We’ve learned that it’s simply not working anymore - if it ever has. The thing that has been lacking is the peer-to-peer communication that makes safety more about “us” than just “me.”

Social media feed for workplace safety and quality

This need for interaction and sense of community is why we’re introducing ‘SafetyFeed’ -  our new social media for safety. This technology will help companies raise peer-to-peer engagement in workplace safety. It’s a completely new way of thinking in safety communication and engagement, offering a huge step forward as we strive towards safety excellence.

We’ve all seen from the different social media platforms where we communicate and interact, that we follow information shared about the people that are interesting to us. Usually they are our friends, relatives, thought leaders and public figures, and the same model applies to engaging people in safety. You will see more engagement and activity if you help to open the lines of communication and make HSEQ relevant. The result is that people want to see information shared by their team, their own supervisors and their organisation’s safety champions. It doesn’t only make people come back to the information channel to see if there is something new, it also lowers the level to report observations as you see others doing it. This way we will have a solid foundation for a more proactive safety culture!

One thing that’s discussed a lot in modern leadership is the individual’s responsibility when reaching goals. Typically, we say that we did things as a team when we’ve reached the goals and that’s great, but what people rarely ask is how individuals contributed, a factor that might also be hard to evaluate. With SafetyFeed, people can actually see their own contribution and be proud of their work as part of the team’s effort.

Safety feed collects information in real-time to an understandable feed.

SafetyFeed has different information flows, like any other media feed. You can check the general feed for overall activity, view things that are relevant to you, or you can just watch a project/site specific feed to understand what’s happening there. We also believe in data visualisation, and that you should always take pictures when observing risks. The pictures also play a crucial role in SafetyFeed, since we all know that a picture can tell much more than words.
